Seagate has released its Starfield Xbox Game drive but your Xbox Series X|S won’t be able to play Bethesda’s game from it.
The Starfield-themed game drive for Xbox was announced back in June of this year for a release this month. The drive features exclusive Starfield artwork and customizable RGB LED lighting. “Officially licensed by Bethesda and wrapped in exclusive artwork commemorating the explorers from Constellation, the Game Drive and Game Hub display a design that feels pulled directly from the Settled Systems of Starfield, Seagate’s press release from June reads. “Featuring customizable RGB LED lighting, the drives bring the majesty of the stars to the gamers’ ecosystem. Available with up to 5TB of capacity, the Game Drive is lightweight in design, making it easy to take an entire library on-the-go. The Game Drive and the Game Hub are connected and powered with high-speed USB 3.2 Gen 1, and the Game Drive does not need a separate power cord, making it easy for gamers to play from anywhere. Designed to work with Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, both drives are easily installed through Xbox OS in under two minutes so gamers can launch into action.”

Truly, it’s a visually appealing drive for sure, but Xbox Series players hoping to match the drive with their console and play the game from it will be disappointed. Starfield, being optimized for Xbox Series X|S, requires the game to be played from the internal SSD or from a storage expansion card. Yes, there are some Xbox Series X|S-optimized games that can still run from an external HDD/SDD, but Starfield isn’t one of them.
So, while Seagate advertises the drive as being officially licensed by Bethesda and being “Constellation Certified” for use on both Xbox and PC, don’t get the illusion you can actually play Starfield on your Xbox console from this drive. Of course, you can still install Starfield on the internal SSD, and keep Seagate’s drive for additional storage of older Xbox games.
Seagate’s game drive also works on PC, but Starfield’s system requirements mention that you’ll need an SSD in order to play the game. As such, you might just be able to play Starfield on PC from this drive, but you’ll likely run into some performance issues.
More information about the Starfield-themed Xbox game drive can be found on Seagate’s official website here. There you’ll also find links to purchase the drive (in several sizes) from select retailers. The Seagate Starfield Special Edition Game Drive for Xbox is available in capacities of 2TB (US$109.99) and 5TB (US$169.99). The Seagate Starfield Special Edition Game Hub for Xbox is available in an 8TB (US$239.99) capacity.
